The Bottom Line

Single drain cleaning (snake): $150 to $350. Kitchen sink, bathroom sink, tub, or shower. Usually cleared in 30 to 60 minutes.

Main sewer line cleaning: $250 to $500, cleared with a professional cable machine through your cleanout.

Watch out for the "$89 drain special." The advertised price and the price on the invoice are usually two different numbers. We explain how that game works below, and why we just publish our real pricing instead.

A clogged drain is the most common call we get. It is also the job where homeowners get burned on pricing more than any other, because most companies will not tell you what it costs until a technician is standing in your kitchen. By then you're not comparing prices. You're negotiating with someone who knows your sink is full of gray water.

So here are the real numbers. This is what drain cleaning actually costs in Orange County in 2026, what makes the price go up or down, and how to tell whether you have a simple clog or a bigger sewer problem hiding behind it.

What Drain Cleaning Costs in Orange County (2026)

These are the same prices published on our drain cleaning service page, based on typical residential jobs across Orange County:

ServiceTypical Cost RangeTimeline
Single drain cleaning (snake)$150 to $35030 to 60 minutes
Main line cleaning (cable)$250 to $5001 to 2 hours
Sewer camera inspection$150 to $35030 to 60 minutes
Floor drain cleaning$150 to $30030 to 60 minutes

Most single-fixture clogs land at the lower end of the range. Main line work varies more because line length, access, and what is actually blocking the pipe all play a role. Either way, you get the exact price before we start, not after.

Why the Price Varies

Which drain is clogged. A bathroom sink with a hair clog two feet down is a quick job. A kitchen line packed with 15 years of grease that runs 40 feet under the slab is not. Kitchen lines are consistently the toughest single-fixture drains in Orange County homes because grease hardens on the pipe walls and narrows the opening year after year.

Where the blockage sits. The further down the line the clog is, the more cable it takes to reach it and the longer the job runs. A blockage at the fixture trap is the easy case. A blockage out near the city connection is the hard one.

What is causing it. Hair and food debris clear fast. Tree roots, heavy scale in old cast iron, and compacted grease put up a fight. Roots in particular tend to grow back unless the line gets a proper cleaning and, in some cases, a repair.

Cleanout access. If your home has an accessible outdoor cleanout, we can get straight into the main line. If there is no cleanout, or it is buried or broken, we have to pull a toilet or go through a roof vent, which adds time. Plenty of older homes in Orange, Santa Ana, and Garden Grove were built before cleanouts were standard.

The "$89 Drain Special" Trap

You have seen the ads. A big company offers a drain cleaning special for $79 or $99, sometimes less. Here is what the fine print on those offers typically says: first-time customers only, regular business hours only, main line only, through an accessible outdoor cleanout only, cable machine only, and the homeowner must be present.

Translation: the coupon applies to the easiest possible version of the job. If your clog is in a kitchen line, if your cleanout is buried, if it is after 5 PM, or if the technician decides the line "really needs" a bigger, more expensive service, the coupon disappears and the real quote shows up. The cheap special is not a price. It is a way to get a commissioned technician into your house.

We do not run specials because we do not need to. Our everyday pricing is at or below what most companies charge after the coupon falls apart, and the number we quote on the phone or at your door is the number on the invoice.

How We Clear Drains

We run professional cable machines sized to the line: smaller cables for sink, tub, and shower drains, and a full-size machine for the main sewer line through your cleanout. The cable cuts through the blockage, we run water to confirm the drain is flowing at full capacity, and we tell you what came out of the line and why it happened.

If the clog pattern says something is wrong inside the pipe, the same drain backing up every few months, roots coming back on the cable, water that drains but never quite right, we run an HD sewer camera and you watch the footage with us in real time. If the pipe is sound, you are done, and the cleaning solved it. If there is a real structural issue, we walk you through actual repair options instead of selling you the same cleaning over and over. Either way, you know exactly what you are dealing with before spending another dollar.

What About Hydrojetting?

Hydrojetting blasts high-pressure water through the line at 3,000 to 4,000 PSI to scour the pipe walls, and you will hear it pitched constantly in Orange County because it turns a $250 drain call into a $500 to $900 ticket. Here is the honest version: the overwhelming majority of residential clogs are fully solved with a properly run cable machine. Hair, soap, food debris, paper, grease blockages, moderate roots. That is why we clear drains with cables and cameras, and it is a big part of why our pricing stays where it is.

Jetting has a legitimate place, mostly in commercial kitchen lines packed wall to wall with grease. But for the average Orange County home, here is what many companies will not tell you: a line that "needs jetting every year" does not have a cleaning problem. It has a pipe problem. Recurring roots mean cracked joints the roots keep growing back through. Heavy scale means the cast iron is reaching end of life. Paying premium jetting prices over and over treats the symptom at two or three times the price without ever fixing the cause. When a line is genuinely past the point of cleaning, the money belongs in a repair, not another expensive rinse.

So if a company quotes you hydrojetting before anyone has looked at your line or run a camera, get a second opinion.

Why Orange County Drains Clog So Often

Three local factors do most of the damage:

Hard water. Orange County water runs 15 to 25 grains per gallon of hardness. That mineral content reacts with soap to form scum that hardens on pipe walls, and it leaves scale deposits that slowly choke the line. It is the same reason water heaters die early here. Drains in OC simply narrow faster than drains in soft water areas.

Old sewer lines and mature trees. Homes built before roughly 1980 in neighborhoods across Fullerton, Anaheim, Tustin, Costa Mesa, and Old Towne Orange often have clay or cast iron sewer lines. Clay pipe joints are exactly where thirsty tree roots force their way in, and 40-plus years of established landscaping means big root systems hunting for water.

Grease. It goes down the drain as a liquid, cools in the line, and sets up like candle wax. Every grease-clogged kitchen line we open tells the same story. This has nothing to do with Orange County specifically except that we cook here too.

What This Looks Like on Real Jobs

Two recent calls that show the range:

The Saturday morning sewage backup. A homeowner's backyard cleanout was overflowing with sewage coming up into the grass. We had someone out within a couple of hours, ran the cable, and pulled a mass of roots that had grown into the line. We showed the homeowner exactly what came out of the pipe, cleared the line completely, and the final price came in well under what they were bracing for. Weekend saved.

The kitchen sink that would not drain. Water backing up in the kitchen with no obvious cause. We came out the same afternoon, diagnosed a buildup further down the line, quoted the price before touching anything, and had it flowing again in about an hour. The total was less than what two other companies had quoted over the phone without ever seeing the job.

That is the pattern we aim for on every drain call: fast response, honest diagnosis, price before work, and you see what caused the problem.

When a Clog Is Actually a Sewer Problem

Sometimes the clog is a symptom, not the disease. Call it a main line or sewer issue when you see:

  • Multiple fixtures backing up at once. If the toilet, tub, and kitchen sink are all slow, the problem is downstream of all of them, in the main line.
  • Gurgling sounds from a toilet or tub when water runs somewhere else in the house.
  • Water rising in the lowest drain, usually a shower or floor drain, when you run the washing machine.
  • Sewer smell inside the house or in the yard.
  • The same drain clogging over and over. A drain that needs snaking every few months has a structural problem: root intrusion, a belly where waste collects, an offset joint, or heavy scale.

This is where a sewer camera inspection ($150 to $350) earns its keep. We run an HD camera through the line and you watch the footage with us in real time. If the pipe is sound, you know cleaning solved it. If there is a crack, offset, or collapsed section, you know exactly what you are dealing with before spending another dollar on repeat cleanings. Structural problems are covered on our sewer line repair and replacement page, and that is a topic we are covering in depth in an upcoming post.

Buying a home in OC? Get a sewer camera inspection before you close. A $150 to $350 inspection has saved our clients from unknowingly buying homes with collapsed sewer lines that cost five figures to replace. Standard home inspections do not look inside the sewer line.

Should You Try Liquid Drain Cleaner First?

We would rather you did not, and not because we want the service call. Chemical drain cleaners are caustic. When they work, they burn through part of the clog. When they fail, which is often on anything bigger than light hair buildup, that chemical sits in the pipe, eating at old metal drains and waiting for whoever opens the line next. On aging galvanized and cast iron drains, common in older OC homes, repeated chemical use genuinely shortens the pipe's life.

If you want to try something first: a plunger, a cheap plastic hair-pulling tool for bathroom drains, or pulling and cleaning the P-trap under a sink. Those are safe. If those do not fix it, the clog is deeper than DIY tools reach, and it is time to call.

Keeping Your Drains Clear

Cheap habits that prevent expensive calls: use mesh strainers in the kitchen and shower, never pour grease down the drain (pour it into a can, let it set, trash it), run hot water for 30 seconds after doing dishes, and keep anything that is not toilet paper out of the toilet, including wipes labeled "flushable." For kitchen sinks that see heavy use, an enzyme-based treatment once a month keeps buildup soft. If you have a known problem line, a scheduled cleaning once a year costs far less than an emergency backup on a holiday weekend.
